Jubilee Hero Power Home Rule
Looking at Shopping Spree, it’s just not that great.
It’s cool to always have a side scheme to clear and trigger some of the justice upgrades like Chance Encounter, and Skilled Investigator. Even with economical deck building, I was able to do some of that. I wisely added Cell Phone into her deck, just to always have an item to grab... In all of Marvel Champions, there are only two items cards which cost three. Some heroes have no item cards. Most items cost one or two. So Shopping Spree pretty much saves you zero resources and often ends up costing you more for the same item. Really, you're just getting to search a deck for an item. It would be fantastic with Adam Warlock. With other heroes? Meh. So far she’s helped herself and Gambit find an item... ...and Gambit never used the item she got for him –sometimes that can happen. Overall, it’s a very mediocre side scheme. With that said ⇒
Her hero power NEVER gets used...
Her hero power feels like such bad hero design. Shopping Spree requires her to exhaust, her hero power requires her to exhaust, Disguise requires her to exhaust, many of her events require specific resources which means she'll probably need to exhaust to play them. Her Sunglasses and Coat add to her basic stats, but she'll probably never use them because she's always exhausted. Heaven forbid that she needs to defend, that completely handicaps her. And somehow, she has no readies in her hero cards.
That makes her feel so completely broken --like anything she does exhausts her, and now she can't do any of the other things she wants to do. Oh, she checked her watch --oops, she's exhausted.
She seems like a support hero, so I added a few “if” statements to help with that role.
Proposed Hero Power change:
Resource: Exhaust Jubilee → generate a * resource. If this resource is spent to play an ally or support, ready Jubilee. If Wolverine is in play, draw a card.
Just a couple “if” statements to add conditions which could often make her power useful. Her stat line is among the lowest in Marvel Champions. Her items help with this. She still doesn't get to ready if she uses this to pay for an event (as mentioned, her hero power would definitely help pay for her events). I thought about adding upgrades to this power, but I want to keep the change minimal, and her item cards are upgrades. This basically should help her get built out -meh- a little faster? Since her basic powers aren't game-changers, this change will only help a little in the early game, and help a little more late game, BUT she’ll get to use her hero power more often, and that’s fun.
Does this make her a little OP?
As D20 Woodworking said, "I'm fine with that." There are plenty of hard villains and expert modes which are unreachable for my (economy) decks. The main point here is that her original power is completely useless, and the home rule makes it more playable + more fun.
