Winter Break Playthroughs (Red Skull) 2025

Black Widow - Justice + Rocket - Aggression vs Crossbones

Just for fun!  I just wanted a fun playthrough with some older heroes to start the break.  I might play a few more RoRS villains with similar hero combinations.  Plus I want to test Adam Warlock with the flippy Counter Earth.

Pairing:  Black Widow almost feels like a protection deck.  She blocks so much damage and bad stuff.  Rocket was a slow build, but things happened in order.  Lots of control until they got built out, that's always a nice feel.  I like Crossbones.  He's easy-ish for my decks, but he has those nice weapons which mess with you, and lots of minions with special abilities.  Natasha and Rocket were able to prevent the main scheme from advancing for a while, but it's so short with 3 per player, that eventually, the encounter deck advanced it.  Rocket handled almost all of the minions.  I held back on Rocket's Pistol, but that's a mistake, because he can discard them for two extra cards.

Black Widow: I added a few of Nick Fury's preparation cards just to add some spice, but I never used them.  They're sub-standard.  Invisibility Gear might be okay.  Again, I never used it.  I don't know.  I might swap them back.  No point in having prep cards that she's not going to play.  Otherwise, she was amazing as usual.  Tons of board control, just keeping things pinned down for Rocket to blow up.

Rocket: Slow build, but it was oddly in order.  All three Follow Through cards came out before a single weapon hit the board.  Rocket got hit a couple times and had to flip, but when his attacks started flying, it was immense overkill.  Two Hand Cannons plus Combat Training plus Cybernetic Skeleton plus Soaring Acrobatics ==> that's 8 attack plus 3 overkill for 11 total.  Crossbones got flipped and nuked in two rounds.  So fun to throw those big overkill attacks.  It's like he's daring the minions to come out.

Captain Marvel - Leadership + Iron Man - Aggression vs Absorbing Man

Pairing:  Just for fun again.  I haven't played these two in a while.  It's fun because I've tweaked these decks over time.  It feels like playing new decks.  I like absorbing man's environments.  I like the feel of how his cards sometimes connect with the environments, but sometimes they don't and it feels like a little win.  This was a good start for both heroes.  I really like the feel that Iron Man brings, where the other hero is supporting while he suits up, then he goes on the offense.

Captain Marvel:  Great support early on, especially when you're trying to stretch to play two important cards, and she can get you an extra card.  This is a big Avengers deck.  At the end, she pulled an Avengers Assemble with 4 allies.  She crushed Absorbing man with 34 damage.

Iron Man:  Stayed down for two rounds, and picked up four Tech Upgrades for a 5-card hand size.  It does seem like the first four or five rounds, he's just playing upgrades.  Last round, he topped Captain Marvel with 37 damage.  Unbelievable.  He's so destructive.  This is one reason why I moved Bootcamp --he has enough upgrades and damage as it is.

Vision - Leadership + Wasp - Aggression vs Zola

Pairing: More silly fun.  Just playing through the Red Skull box.  It's a nice break to go back and play older heroes against different scenarios.  This was a good challenge.  Both heroes had very unlucky decks with almost all upgrades near the bottom of the deck.  Then they got super unlucky with the main scheme exactly threating out when Vision was ready to thwart a ton.  Having Wasp's overkill deck was cool though, as her piercing and overkill eliminated many Toughs and Retaliates.  More than half the damage to Zola was with overkill.  Lots of minions for her to hit.  Vision mostly thwarted, and brought out Vivian countless times.

Vision: he was great even without the Solar Gem.  This was maybe the most unlucky game I've had with Vision, and he was solid.  He doesn't seem to play his expensive allies as much.  I might move Deathlock to another deck.  Hawkeye is a great ally to play with an overkill deck on the table.

Wasp:  Nadia was so unlucky with her upgrades on the bottom of the deck.  I mean this was a great challenge for her.  She really handled the minions and did most of the damage through the game.  Several of Zola's minions have Tough.  I would say it was a sub-par game for her, but it still showed the power of overkill and piercing.  Her damage distribution was amazing, and avoiding retaliate for most of the game was great.

Hawkeye - Leadership + Quicksilver - Protection vs Taskmaster

Pairing:
Because of Taskmaster's power, I chose two heroes who could stay in hero form longer.  They both got super unlucky in their decks again.  Most of their resource generators were stuck on the bottom of their decks.  Taskmaster discarded one of Hawkeye's resource generators --for my money, those mechanics are game-wreckers.  You never get to feel like you play the hero.  They had a chance to rush the villain when a well-timed Avengers Assemble came into Hawkeye's hand, which would have done over 20 damage, but I chose to slow-play and build out.  Quicksilver handled all the threat, and defended most turns.  They almost got Taskmaster after he flipped, but could only knock him down from 32 to 4 hp.  Last round, Quicksilver hit for 9 damage, and Hawkeye hit for 29 with 4 allies and 2 arrows.

Hawkeye:  Clint could have done much better, but it shows how capable these heroes are even when handicapped.  When his nemesis came out, his allies took care of him, and Quicksilver thwarted the scheme.  In total, he shot 4 arrows.  Kinda weak, but he did avoid some retaliate.  It's easy to underestimate ranged attacks.  I may do the house rule that he can spend a resource to search for the bow and the quiver.  The quiver opens up so many options for arrows, and thins his deck.  I consider it a must have.  Then when you get a resource generator, it feels like he's starting to fire on all cylinders.

Quicksilver:  Pietro could have done a lot better with Friction Resistance.  He got that and the Avengers Mansion right at the end of his deck.  Terrible.  These unlucky decks do make me want to trim them down to 40 cards.  I try not to go over 43.  He got +1 THW early, and start thwarting for 4 per round.  Too good.  He cleared 3 trapped ally schemes, and then it was ally mayhem for a few rounds.  Overall, Quicksilver was great support for this game.
