Multiplayer / Whole Box Deck Building / GMW difficulty level

Non-negotiables + Whole Box Building Goals / Limitations

Because of my limited options for deck building, what if we are never able to do some of the harder villains?  For me, I don’t care.  I like the team role-specific puzzle aspect to it.  I want something that plays easy on game night.  My friends are learning the game –they’re not going to sit around for an hour doing deck-building for a game they’ve never played.  I need a box of playable heroes ready to go.  For me it’s less deck-building, and more deck-tweaking.  Every once in a while I’ll do some aspect swapping. I'll never play solo for Marvel Champions. I like the puzzle of how to pair aspects and heroes to create a good team.

Note on ally dispersal in Aspect decks for whole box building.

I try to follow this rule, with a few exceptions:

  • Leadership: 6 allies per deck (+Make the Call)

  • Protection: 5

  • Justice: 3-4

  • Aggression: 3-4

People who deck-build in solo play to get the perfect deck for every game usually add more allies, but they have unlimited access to allies, and are not showing up to game night with a box of heroes already paired with aspects, ready to pick and play.

Future Worries

One of my worries with Galaxies Most Wanted moving forward is that Villains will be built only for Munchkin Min/Max solo decks who all have 8-10 allies. These are more common than you think, just poke around https://marvelcdb.com. Galaxies Most Wanted is an absolutely broken difficulty level, and indicative of the devs shifting content for elite solo play. The voice of the community have mostly agreed that GMW is broken, not for casual play. 95% of wins against Ronin are all elite rush deck strategies: forget build-up, forget board control --those are impossible goals with Ronin. Without extensive house-rules (like these:

it's pretty much unplayable for the Whole Box Building economy.

Villain packs:

These are my favorites so far. They're not campaigns, they're stand-alone scenarios which have been carefully designed and balanced for the average gaming group. If they make more of these, I will probably pre-order them.

  • Green Goblin --both scenarios are huge favorites.
  • Most people don't like Wrecking Crew (they think it's too easy), but I love it because you feel rewarded for taking out a villain.
  • Kang is great. Everyone loved that scenario. You get a little bit of the Wrecking Crew mechanic, and a little of the tough solo villain stuff.
  • The Hood usually starts easy, but can be deceptively difficult. Plus, The Hood's large modular selection lets you add that 0.x difficulty to any scenario.
  • I love these so much that purchasing Mojo Mania is a no-brainer.
These are super fun for game-night. Green Goblin Mutagen Formula has become my official test-bed for my hero decks / pairs because it has a little of everything + plenty of minions. Honestly, I wish there were more of these Villain packs.
