Hero / Aspect List
My current hero / aspect list, why I picked those aspects, and future desires for my hero decks.
Spider Man / Protection
This was my first swap. I swapped Spidey Justice with Vision Protection. Spidey has 3 defense (highest in the core box). Add the Armored Vest and a few Indomitable cards for readying, and he became a staple defender for multi-player. He's kind of my reference Protection deck. Very reliable, he's an easy pick for supporting the team. In so many ways he sets the tone. Swinging Web Kick is the attack efficiency standard --four effective resources for eight damage. Some people don't like Webbed Up, but we only play multiplayer, so it's a huge play at the table. Status: staying in Protection.
She Hulk / Justice
I actually picked up some cheap extra cards from Crazy Jackalope games --a few extras in all aspects, plus a bunch in Justice to give She Hulk her own deck. This is such an improvement for She Hulk. I added Great Responsibility to tank threat, then added Recuperation, Endurance, Crew Quarters, and Downtime to give her the ability to heal up to 15 on one flip. That and a few staple Justice cards makes her so much more fun and successful. Status: staying in Justice
Iron Man / Aggression
I left Iron Man in Aggression, and added a few tech cards to help him build up early. He's a slow builder. He has a few Meditation cards which seem to pop up early enough. I've slowly added to his deck over time. He has Honed Technique and some multi-target Aggression cards including Dive Bomb. This adds to his puzzle, by throwing in some powerful aerial cards. He's not an ideal aerial hero with his boots. His deck has been changed a lot. I may go back to just having him as a Bootcamp ally deck. Some people play him in Protection, but he pretty much has to start in Alter Ego for a few rounds to get his hand size up. That doesn't help the team. With a 7 card hand size, Leadership could be thematic. Status: staying in Aggression for now, but tweaking his deck.
Captain Marvel / Leadership
I left Captain Marvel in Leadership and built an Avenger deck for her with Team Building Exercise. She has other Avenger cards like the Avengers Mansion, Quinjet, Quincarrier, and the Avengers Tower. This is more of a "Voltron" Avenger deck. I wouldn't mind swapping her into Aggression, but I love that she can use Mission Leader for cheap. That doubles down on her card support theme. Status: staying in Leadership.
Black Panther / Protection
I left Black Panther in Protection, and built an expensive team support deck. He has extra resources, plus Ancestral Knowledge can pull those resources back into his deck. I added Avengers Mansion, Med Team, Helicarrier, and a few expensive allies. If I switch a hero into Protection, I'll probably switch with Black Panther, because he can do anything. That's part of what makes him great for Protection: he has Wakanda Forever which only costs one, so he can do all the ordinary Protection stuff while still affording his Black Panther stuff. You get the best of both worlds. Status: open to changes.
Captain America / Leadership
I left Steve Rodgers in Leadership and built an Avenger deck for him, similar to Captain Marvel with Mission Leader, and Team Building Exercise. He has other Avenger cards like the Avengers Mansion, Quinjet, Quincarrier, and the Avengers Tower. This is more of an ally swarm deck with Make the Call, and focused around Avengers Assemble. I wouldn't mind putting Cap into Protection, but his Alter Ego points me more to Leadership. Status: staying in Leadership.
Ms Marvel / Justice
Why they put Ms Marvel in Protection, I'll never know. Maybe it's a good solo deck? I swapped her into Justice, and that's where she belongs... She's very flippy, and her recursion is amazing for Wiggle Room, or extra thwarting. I added Hit and Run + Multitasking in her deck to maximize her Embiggen and Shrink upgrades. She has some of the standard Justice upgrades like Chance Encounter and Skilled Investigator because she's able to clear schemes easily. Status: staying in Justice.
Thor / Aggression
I left Thor in Aggression. That's a no-brainer. Recently, I added Honed Technique plus Dive Bomb to give him that real "Arrival in Wakanda" nuclear option. It's maybe a little OP, and I could probably add some more expensive cards for Honed Technique, but he has that annoying 4-card hand-size in hero form, so he has a mix of cheap and expensive cards. His early plays were mediocre, so I thought this would be a good deck to throw in some heat. He's gone from lack-luster to Cataclysmic Hammer-Slammer. Status: staying in Aggression.
Black Widow / Justice
This is another no-brainer, though Protection has a few preparation cards as well. She has maximum board control, you just need table space for all the preparation cards. The fact that she's very flippy to get maximum efficiency from playing her preparation cards makes me keep her in Justice. I think she's easy to play - she sets up more and more board control every round. She actually helped us defeat Red Skull the first time we played him. Status: staying in Justice.
Dr Strange / Protection
I left Dr Strange in Protection, because he's OP, so I built him another expensive team-support deck, similar to Black Panther. That way he takes more of a back-seat for most of the game, and helps other players get built out. I added The Gardener to his deck, just for fun. My group loves the Cosmic Entity cards. Also, his Alter Ego power is sparsely useful, and Wong can achieve the same effect, so Stephen can stay in hero form to defend for the group very easily. That said, Doc can play any aspect. Status: open to changes.
Hulk / Aggression
Ugh. Hulk. His deck is so broken. I did a major overhaul with custom cards. I think he would be really fun to run in Protection with up to 25 life, up to 8 Rec, and 3 Def on his card. This is one of the more tempting options. He's pretty indestructible. With his 4 card hand size, the cheaper Protection cards might be better. I left him in Aggression because his hero cards are boosted by all strength resources, and that's easier to build in Aggression. Figuring a Hulk Protection deck with heavy strength resources might be doable, though. On the flip side, I may finally do that counter-intuitive Brute Force deck with Hulk which would try to get the best of both worlds. Status: staying in Aggression for now, but might do the weird Brute Force deck.
Spider Woman / Justice Aggression
Her best pairing is probably Leadership and Aggression. I don't like the expensive allies in her deck, as her goal is to play cheap cards, so I keep her out of Leadership. Protection would be weird with her, gaining a late addition to DEF after playing a protection card. With all her stuns and confuses, she was the hero who inspired the Stalwart home rule. I really like Spider Woman. She plays a lot like Gamora. She has plenty of resources. Status: plenty of options, but leaving her in Justice / Aggression hybrid.
Hawkeye / Leadership
I left Hawkeye in Leadership and built an Avenger deck for him, similar to Captain Marvel. This is more of a "Voltron" deck with a mix of cheap and expensive allies to handle any situation. He needs to stay in Leadership to have allies block for him due to his glass cannon (9 hp) nature. He has a lot of confuse and stun to help out as well. It's a more aggressive Leadership deck, where he focuses on allies, but at some point, free arrows start flying around! Allies and arrows --he clears the board. Status: staying in Leadership.
Ant Man / Leadership
This is an interesting Avenger Voltron deck with 6 upgrade cards for allies. He doesn't come with Avengers Tower, or the Triskelion, but he has Stinger, who doesn't count against the ally limit, so he can get 4 allies out. With Mighty Avengers, this is a power deck. Here's the thing. I'm not an Ant Man fan. Of course some of my friends are big fans, so he's fun to have in the box, but I mostly picked him up because he'll certainly go out of print, and I wanted to use his deck to switch aspects. I'll probably drop him in Protection, but maybe Aggression. He's probably best in Leadership. I've been looking into Marvel CDB. Status: hoping to change.
Wasp / Aggression
I left Wasp in Aggression and built an Overkill deck ==> she can multi-trigger overkill by distributing one attack onto multiple targets. Even Rocket can't do that. Originally, I wanted to play her in Justice, because her Alter Ego power is very useful, but also, the 3 Def in Giant form makes her an excellent hero for Protection with Perseverance and Ready to Rumble. Red Room Training gives her piercing or retaliate, and the Bio-Synthetic Wings give her damage reduction in tiny form. Some of her hero upgrades really lend themselves toward Protection. Nadia is quite versatile, and that's usually great for Leadership, so it's hard to pick a preferred aspect. Status: open to changes.
Quicksilver / Protection
Pietro is another great hero for Deft Focus. He has a 1/1/1 stat-line. Not optimal for Protection. He can improve to 2/2/3 with upgrades --this makes him slow-starter for Protection. But the nearly endless readies he's able to do --that's amazing. Team Protection? He can really block for everyone on the team, even in 4-player. That's a game-changer. Keeping in mind that it'll be a slow start, he's a great pick for 3-4 player Protection. However, I would love to see him in Aggression, hitting for 3 x 3 = 9 damage from basic attacks. And Justice wouldn't be bad due to his Alter Ego power helping him cruise through his deck for the cards he wants. Super versatile. Status: open to changes.
Scarlet Witch / Justice
Wanda is moderately flippy, having the same Alter Ego power as Quicksilver. This helps her fish for upgrades. She adds a little risk because she runs through the encounter deck to power her best cards, and that adds acceleration tokens. Plus she rips through her own deck pretty fast, and that adds encounter cards. Her hero power has a good amount of control, which feels like Justice, but Wanda can play anything. As a mystic, I gave her the Living Tribunal to add that thematic feel. Her 2 Thw was the deciding factor for me. Status: open to changes.
Groot / Protection
This is a "Perfect Protection" deck. He has all the "if you take no damage" upgrades. 3 Def on his card and the growth counters really pull me into Protection. He just needs a few readies. His only draw back is that he likes to flip to his "alter ego" for more counters. It's funny, all the Guardians have an alter ego side, but not a civilian name. Groot's alter ego is "Groot." Every game I've played with him, he's been able to load up on counters and do some serious thwart / damage in the late game. That's great pacing for Protection. Deft Focus is a no-brainer in his deck. There are lot of solo Justice decks for Groot on Marvel CDB which could be useful in multiplayer. Status: staying in Protection.
Rocket / Aggression
Another no-brainer. Overkill is supported in Aggression. Like Groot, Rocket's Alter Ego isn't a different identity. You flip Rocket to become Rocket... He likes to flip mid-game. That's great pacing. Side Holster is a must. He's super popular in our group. Once he gets built out, minions beware, it's on! He does so well against villains with retaliate, as overkill won't trigger it. Of course, we know about the Repurpose Protection deck (although I don't have SP//DR), but thematically, we like Rocket blasting away. Status: staying in Aggression.
Star Lord / Leadership
Peter is a big favorite on the forums for his massive end game damage, but he's less so in our group because he stresses out the group, adding so much risk on the board. Usually with Star Lord, we can slow-play the villain and just get ready to one-shot him after you beat the first stage. This lets you focus on schemes, but you kind of have to, because Star Lord gets everyone in trouble. The team are constantly putting out fires set by Peter. His Alter Ego power works with Cosmo, but not much else. Notably this is the first Hero expansion to come without double resource cards. Star Lord plays MUCH better with them. With his hero power giving all allies the guardian trait, he really leans into Leadership to create an interesting puzzle for what allies to include. He's my only Guardian in Leadership (Adam doesn't count). His deck is a total Voltron deck. Status: staying in Leadership.
Gamora / Aggression
G-girl seems perfect for Justice or Aggression with her hero power. I add mostly cards which will activate on the villain phase, because her Finesse and Precision powers are once per PHASE. You get more free thwart and damage if you trigger on both phases. Her alter ego power isn't bad. She could easily slide over to justice. She's more a "death by 1000 cuts" kind of hero, so she suffers from damage reduction and retaliate. She's probably the best Hero for Martial Prowess, and I usually add the Energy Spear in her deck for one of her allies. Status: staying in Aggression.
Drax / Protection
I agree with most players that Drax is definitely best in Protection. Drax gives us our first overtly Aggressive Protection archetype, dealing heavy damage from mid to late game. Drax's vengeance counters are amazing. Drax is also the original Brute Force deck in Aggression, where you just don't do a basic attack. He can get his ATK up to 8 easily, and up to 10 with some extra stuff. If I did this, I would switch Drax with Wasp. The deciding factor for me is his cards Counter Punch, Leading Blow, and Shake It Off. Most people agree that Drax has the best precon deck. Status: staying in protection.
Venom / Justice
Flash is the ultimate in versatility with his guns. He can play anything, and notably, he is one of the few heroes to have a strong synergy with Pool with the ability to carry four weapons with Side Holster. I mostly had him in Justice as a Guardian, because of Think Fast. With whole box deckbuilding, sometimes we need a hero in an aspect just to be able to use some of the good cards. Then I picked up Nebula in Justice (she can also use that card), so right now, Venom could be used to switch with anyone. Wasp, Vision, Deadpool... I'm tempted to try Pool, but I would need to see if two can play in Pool, because I'm definitely leaving Deadpool in Pool. Status: open to changes.
Spectrum / Protection
Monica has really hit the bases. She's maybe the most overtly versatile hero in the box. She started in Leadership (Precon), then swapped with Vision for Justice because she has the ability to get 3 THW, and then I swapped her with Ms Marvel for Protection. She's a more aggressive protection deck. She's popular with my game group, because she's so versatile and resource heavy. I would say my group sometimes balks on defending with her, because she has other great options. I might shift her cards to be more upgrade-driven, so she can defend without defending. She does have some nice ways to ready and switch forms, so she's decent in Protection, but I think I liked her best in Justice. Status: open to changes where I need aerial.
Adam Warlock
Oh boy. As promising as Adam sounds, he is terrible for whole box deckbuilding. He wants to be (but isn't) a Tutor Deck (Discard Search Deck). Quantum Magic is supposed to facilitate this, but it never works. Adam and Hulk are my two biggest home-rule heroes. I've played him more as a hybrid-leadership deck, with the Energy Spear. Adam's deck has been the hardest to build, by far. I added a custom card Counter Earth, but I thought it was a little OP, so I made his deck 50 cards to compensate (plus just to have a 50 card deck). I gave him Sorcerer Supreme, because Dr Strange is already OP. I added double resources, Combat Training, Heroic Intuition, and Armored Vest, because he can ready with his cape. I might take another ally upgrade from Star Lord. Once he's built out, he's super-versatile and amazing, but he's a slow build. He feels more like a justice hero than anything else. With the home rules, he's much more fun to play, but still difficult. Status: locked into hero deck rule.
Nebula / Justice
Techniques! I liked Nebula right off the bat. She's way more flippy than Venom ==> definitely want to keep her in Justice. She's oddly popular in our group. She has that Sentinels of the Multiverse mechanic where a technique gets discarded at the start of her hero turn (but not on alter ego). For my gaming group, they've played SotM forever, so this is familiar territory, and they know how powerful it can be. Nebula commonly has big bursts when all her techniques trigger. That's part of the fun, you build up techniques over two rounds, then they all fire together. Your rounds on alter ego, you can see this big wave building up. It's very engaging. Status: staying in Justice.
Valkyrie / Aggression
Val is still one of my all-time favorites. Rich gave her to me as a gift. I looked her up, and she still rests as the lowest ranked hero on many boards. I agree with D20, she's one of my fastest, easiest to build up, highest card-draw heroes in the box. She's maybe more of a minion slayer than Thor. This Richie Con, she came out of the box, and she was an instant hit. She's an absolute blender, but I noticed that's the fun of playing her --draw minions and defeat minions to draw more cards and ready. Her turns are always action-packed. No lame turns. If we meta-game a little, I think it's engaging hero design. She's a much more fun design than Star Lord, in terms of a risk / reward hero. I would like to try her in a counter-punch Protection build with her spear and the access to free readies. That's an option, but Aggression is so good, it's hard to switch. Status: staying in Aggression.
Vision / Leadership
Vision is another hero who has run the aspect bases. Honestly, I've never had a bad game with him. He was my first multi-form hero. I never played him in Protection (Precon), he's too flippy for that. He switched with Spider Man into Justice immediately. Fantastic switch. Then I had to switch him to Leadership to bring Spectrum into Justice. In Leadership, Vivian is even more of a thing. That's not my favorite play style, but Vision is really fun to play anyway. He's got enough of his own thing going on that most players haven't figured out the OP Vivian recursion strategy. I got the feeling his Precon deck was more of a solo deck, kinda like Ms Marvel's Precon. Status: open to changes.
Nova / Aggression
Maybe the best opening round of any hero, including Valkyrie. Nova is an all-around aggression hero in my box, but aerial makes him super-versatile. I love those aerial cards in all aspects. I'm splitting the aerial aggression cards between Nova and Thor, and both are Honed Technique decks. He has big turns like Val with Unleash the Nova Force. I added Resourceful in his deck to give him another wild resource. Thanks to Boomguy for pointing out that utility. Status: open to changes.
Ironheart / Leadership
I might have to agree with the reviews, when Ironheart gets built out, it's game over. With Go All Out and Push Ahead, I'm leaving her in Leadership just to max out those cards. No other hero can stack as high on basic abilities. Plus there are a few readies in Leadership. She hasn't gotten a lot of play yet, but the playthroughs with her have all been successful in terms of building her out efficiently. The nice thing is that all her forms are pretty good, so even if she gets unlucky, she's still bringing the power. Status: staying in Leadership.
Colossus / Justice
Now we're into the X-men. Colossus came in Protection, and I immediately swapped him to Justice. Again, Colossus is a flippy hero, so not as good in multiplayer Protection. I'm guessing this is another solo Precon deck. There are some expensive Protection decks out there which revolve around getting Armored Up back into the deck. Recently, some new Protection cards have made this more viable, but I don't like volatility in Protection. Plus, justice fits his personality. He's had all good games in Justice, I have no regrets so far. Status: staying in Justice.
Shadowcat / Protection
Shadycat came in Aggression. Not sure why. Form Changing Protection! So awesome! This is how I imagined Vision would work. So many good X-men cards. This is a hybrid Perfect Protection / Vengeance deck. She changes forms when she defend or attacks. There are some great defense cards for this. She's moderately complex. No one else in our group has played her yet, but even if you just play protection cards without thinking, she's super fun and still blocks a ton of damage. I love how she can bypass Guard and Patrol, then damage or thwart whatever she bypassed. So thematic. Status: She's definitely staying in Protection.
Cyclops / Leadership
Scott is a fun deck with all the debuffs. It's definitely a different Leadership archetype. Scott's Visor takes a little setup, but it's great when he blasts some baddies. This has a little of the Hawkeye feel where you're playing allies, then at some point, you start shooting. He can combo with Iceman or Tigra really well, due to their minion affecting upgrades. It's nice to have a leadership deck which can punch really hard. Status: staying in Leadership.
Phoenix / Justice
Jean has great pacing. I feel like she becomes unleashed at just the right time. There are very few heroes who have 3 THW, so that pretty much cements her into Justice --it's too good. It's easy to stay unleashed as well. I'm tempted to throw her into Aggression, because her unleashed powers are so great that she feels hybrid like Gamora --thwarting and damage. The one problem is that if you want to go back from Unleashed, it's an uphill battle. Not sure if this was a thematic choice. Status: staying in Justice.
Wolverine / Aggression
Wolverine is a no-brainer for Aggression, due to his power in playing discounted attack events (costs health). I want to leverage his high REC (6), the highest in the game, but his starting HP is only 10. He could be an interesting Protection deck, as he never wants to flip down, and he heals every round. I actually built him as a Honed Technique deck, just because I had added several attack events to his deck. This lets me play a free attack event plus a boosted one. It feels very much like a double-claw attack every round. Gaining Piercing and Overkill is great against some of the hardened villains. Status: staying in Aggression.
Storm / Leadership
Ororo is a great pick for Leadership as she has so many boosts and debuffs. Her weather events are super fun --one of the ways heroes can get stalwart. She's total team and ally support. She can probably run any aspect. She has paired for some of the fastest wins at the table. The X-men cards for leadership are really powerful. Notably, she doesn't have a lot of upgrades, so playing allies is easier. Of course, she brings the Lightning Bolt. Again, nice to have some big damage options in leadership. One game, Rogue pulled her lightning and finished off the villain. Status: staying in Leadership.
Gambit / Aggression
Remy is a weird mix. Some people play him in Justice because of his alter ego power, which is better in multiplayer to control the encounter deck, but I don't like it primarily because he has to exhaust to use it. He could run Protection with his 3 DEF and Gambit's Guild Armor, but I mostly prefer his counters boosting attack events in Aggression as another Honed Technique deck. I swapped Gambit ==> Aggression, Colossus ==> Justice, Shadowcat ==> Protection. This was a great swap, but Remy is still an option for Justice or Protection. Status: open to changes.
Rogue / Protection
Rogue can play any aspect, but I like the puzzle of trying to fully power her hero cards. Protection gets me around a corner with Dauntless to get retaliate. This powers all her six of her trait events. Then she can max them out by touching an aerial hero. She only has six cards which take advantage of getting all three (Stalwart, Retaliate, and Aerial), but they're really good cards. Mostly she wants to pair with an aerial hero to gain Stalwart and Aerial, but Storm could give stalwart with Clear Skies while Rogue is touching the villain. Status: staying in protection.
Cable / Leadership
Cable can be one of the most powerful heroes once he gets some side schemes in the Victory Display. He feels like Ironheart in that respect. Justice would be an obvious switch for him. His current deck is heavily reliant on Psionic traits, which he gets from Technovirus Purge. You can pull this out on the opening hand, but this is scary, because his obligation puts it back in play. You can slow-play it, and let it pop up on its own, or sometimes your obligation will find it for you. This is why I like him in Leadership - it gives him some non-Psionic options for his cards while dealing with his side scheme. Status: open to changes.
Domino / Justice
Domino is a little too complex for most players. Some really like the puzzle aspect which some heroes have, and that's Neena for sure. She's a good early game hero. She can fill in to thwart or deal damage, and she can control some encounter cards. I added Resourceful to give her another wild resource. She is loaded with wild resource cards. She also likes to flip to Alter Ego to swap the top card of the discard pile. That can recur some of her best cards. Status: staying in justice.
Psylocke / Justice
Psylocke is another puzzle hero, not as complex as Domino, but her katanas / knives are fun flippy weapons. Similarly, she's great in the early game. Lots of effects based on which side your weapons are on. Great stuns and confuses. She has only one alter ego power, and none of her other cards interact with alter ego side. Thus, she can stay up on hero side longer, but her hero hand size is only 4. She has a hybrid feel. I wouldn't mind playing her in aggression or protection, but the other X-Force heroes are so good. Status: open to changes.
Angel / Protection
Until I got Nightcrawler, Angel was my strongest protection deck. Arch-Angel is amazing. Super thematic with the comics, as a disciple of Apocalypse. This is one of the best Aerial traited decks. He can recur Aerial cards + discount them. It's power. Angel can defend for the team, then turn around and hit for big damage. He's a form changer and thematically he adds an acceleration icon to the main scheme when he changes to Archangel. I love this deck. He can probably play any aspect, but he's too good in protection. Status: staying in protection.
X-23 / Aggression
X-23 is a damage powerhouse / death by a thousand cuts sort of hero. Like Wolverine, she takes a lot of damage, but whenever she takes damage, she readies. I love ready builds. So versatile. She could maybe play a Drax-like protection deck where she wants to take damage, but again, the other X-Force heroes are too good in protection. She might could do a Honey Badger Leadership build to recur her signature ally (which she can sorta already do on alter ego). Status: staying in aggression.
Deadpool / Pool
We really consider this a novelty deck, for collection coolness and humor, but less for play. Every now and then we'll be crazy and try Star Lord with Deadpool to lean into the mayhem. The only other hero I would try in pool is Venom with the ability to hold 3 weapons, or 4 with Side Holster. I don't use the weapons in pool very much, so it might be an interesting deck. Obviously, Wade can be powerful, deal damage, be immortal, etc, but the whole table has to deal with his antics. Shadowcat might be another fun hero to pair with him. Status: staying in pool.
Bishop / Leadership
I remember the first time I played Bishop with Rich from Coopgestalt (he played Magik). At first I was thinking his power was terrible, but they built him so well that it totally works. He's very consistent. It really feels like an apology for Adam Warlock. If you love discard control decks, this is the best one I have played. He could probably play any aspect (he'd be a weird protection deck), but I'd love to see him in Justice. He's the only hero who can get all resource cards in his hand, and it's still a good hand. Status: open to changes.
Magik / Aggression
I've fiddled with Magik's deck a few times. Right now, she's an X-men Bootcamp ally deck. She plays with her top card face up, and it can play as part of her hand. Mystic powers activate! She obviously can use some cards others can't. I'm still wanting to add Cosmo and maybe Hulk to her deck, but then I would have to add Honorary X-men and try to combo them. Not worth it, but controlling the top card is so nice for the discount or for discard effects. On the other hand, Goldballs (we can't stop laughing) is a really great ally. We used him to great effect when Mystique added cards into her deck. Status: open to changes.
Iceman / Aggression
I'm often tempted to play Bobby in protection, but the competition is high for X-men protection. Right now he's another bootcamp ally deck. It's fun playing him with Cyclops for all the enemy upgrade synergies. He's a little tough to pilot. He wants to stay ready to add more Frostbite, which is one reason I like having an ally deck to block for him. He could be a great leadership deck. He likes to flip to add more ice cards, then he gets big boosts for playing ice cards + more frostbite upgrades. I even added Team Building Exercise to get more ice! Status: open to changes.
Jubilee / Justice
Jubilation Lee is still one of my favorites, but we had to house-rule her, because ALL her cards exhaust her, and she NEVER uses her hero power. Her house rule helps some, but it's nice and thematic and gives you a ready under certain circumstances. Shopping Spree is -meh- even with Adam Warlock. It's fun to play at the table --more early game, and then it has less to do late game. I actually added the Cell Phone, just to have something to shop for in the late game. I feel like I have to leave her in justice to take advantage of Disguise and Surveillance Team. Status: staying in Justice.
Nightcrawler / Protection
Kurt is my best defender by far. He defended in 3 player vs Stryfe and just owned the board. BAMF is so awesome. He can get up to 5 defense in my box, and with a few readies, he's just blocking everything. The rest is gravy. The only downside is that I almost never use BAMF to power Scout Ahead. He has two of them, and those two cards never get played. If he were in another aspect, or in solo, those cards would get played more. It's tempting just to get BAMF to be more aggressive, but I can't turn my back on power protection, I might actually try him against Ronan. Status: staying in Protection.
Magneto / Leadership
I haven't played Magneto enough. I like the theme of his "expendable ally" deck. I tried to lean into that to give him more allies with a "when revealed" power. I never liked You Got This, because it sacrifices a block, but it's a great end game card. He's a different flavor for leadership, and it's very thematic. He can probably play any aspect. His deck also has a justice feel, but then I don't know who would play his expendable ally deck. He paired with Rogue and had a great game. Status: probably staying in Leadership.
Nick Fury / Justice
Such a different justice hero. We really like him. He feels thematic and has unique mechanics. I wasn't enthusiastic about Nick Fury, but this is a great deck which works fine. Rich loves the Cloud Car --I should throw an aerial card or two in. This is a SHIELD Preparation deck. I don't like his Preparation cards as much as Black Widow's. I swapped a few, to help him out. Note that Nick has no big attacks. The slowest game I played against Green Goblin was Nick and Maria Hill. It was an absolute slog, but Nick can handle threat, and he uses threat as a resource. Status: staying in Justice.
Maria Hill / Leadership
I don't about Maria. She's a total back seat hero. She feels like those Marvel CDB munchkin decks with twelve 2-cost allies. Everyone thinks she's powerful, but no one likes her. I don't think she's powerful, but she is very versatile. She's just a bundle of supports and allies. Her supports are so expensive, she might do better with fewer allies, but she has resource cards where she exhausts allies to generate resources. Her precon isn't too bad for what she is. She needs cheap SHIELD supports with counters on them, then she can add and move counters from one support to another. The Illiad is the common target for this and the rest are hard to manage. I swapped Tac Team for Command Team --that works with her resource cards. I might have to leave her in leadership. Status: maybe better in Justice?
Shuri / Justice
Shuri underwhelmed me. Pet peeve: I don't like that her card just says Black Panther; it should say Shuri. She's like a more convoluted Black Panther. Lots of [do this to trigger that] kinda stuff. She has one Wakanda Forever card (which can show up too early), and the rest is all fiddly triggers, except many of the triggers are allies, so that's more stuff she needs to get on the board to set up. But then, wait, she has supports to help with her allies and upgrades. It's a lot of stuff to get going. Status: I want to move her to Leadership.
Silk / Protection
Ugh! Another useless precon solo protection deck (Vision, Miss Marvel, etc). I'm sure she's great in solo, but her team protection is terrible because she's so flippy. FFG added Ready for a Fight to try to mitigate this. Great card, but absolutely not good enough to help Cindy Moon run protection for the team. This is another deck which makes me worry that FFG are producing content exclusively for solo munchkin deck builders. It's super fiddly (yes, this is a clear trend as the upcoming heroes will show). Wait, there's more badness --this is another Web Warrior deck which could be super powerful if FFG hadn't discontinued Sinister Motives. No-- they designed her AFTER discontinuing Sinister Motives. Are you guys serious? This deck really hit the bases in the bad vibes ballpark. Her powers to tuck cards are cool and interesting. She's blocked Shadows of the Past more than once. I dunno. I really want to pass all her allies to Spider Man. Status: she absolutely needs to be in Justice.
Falcon / Leadership
Sigh. Super fiddly. His Eagle Eyed ability can be a game changer. He feels more like an interesting protection hero. I want to move him out of Leadership, but the Captain America upgrade is pretty thematic. I could swap him with Bucky in aggression, but Falcon has the aerial stuff. He has great defense. He can alt-defend for the table, which he's had to do when another player plays protection, but doesn't defend the team (common problem). He's versatile, and seems to fill in wherever the team needs something. Status: staying in Leadership.
Winter Soldier / Aggression
Bucky! This is more of a Boot Camp ally aggression deck with lots of weapon upgrades. Of course I added Side Holster. He's very versatile, but the Cybernetic Arm and other parts of his kit make me want to keep him in aggression. Firepower is such a cool card, I wish I could give more to Venom and Rocket. I love his guns with piercing and ranged. Plenty of tough retaliation villains to hit with some heavy ammo. I would say he's a versatile attacker, with AOE or whatever you need. Status: staying in Aggression.
Hulkling / Protection
I was very doubtful about Teddy in Protection, but he's done a great job so far. He feels like Spectrum, very versatile. I usually start him in Winged Shape, just to cover the bases. Ready for a Fight works much better in his deck. He doesn't need to flip very often, and I expected to be in Armored Shape all game, but he does fine when switching forms. 13 hp is a nice start as well. He could play any aspect. I like the versatile protection decks. They really fill in the gaps depending on who you're paired with. Status: staying in Protection for now.
Tigra / Aggression
Greer is another minion hunter. This fact alone will probably keep her in Aggression. She could probably play Protection, but I like her combos. She likes to stun minions and leave them there for her On the Hunt and Bring It to gather more cards. She has big turns, vis-a-vis Valkyrie and Nova. She got randomly picked one night, and she kicked some villain rear-ends. We kept asking if she needed help with her minions --NOPE! She's done well in all the games we've played. Avenger legacy cards can work for her, Status: staying in Aggression.
