Final Purchase? Not buying Agents of SHIELD...

With this last X-Force acquisition, I think I might be done collecting.  

This is due in part to FFG retiring some sets.  Here’s what I’m missing:


  • Ant Man

  • War Machine (out of print)

  • Spider Ham*

  • SP//DR*

  • Jubilee

  • Sinister Motives (out of print)*

  • Age of Apocalypse (out of print)

  • Agents of SHIELD*


I guess I wouldn’t mind picking up Ant Man or War Machine.  Avenger Leadership decks are always powerful.  I love form-changers, and I love heroes who build up counters like Gambit and Groot –I want MORE counters!  I’m just not as big a fan of these two, although he has some great cards.  BUT. Then we get to the real problem.  


*Sinister Motives is a real hinge for two big archetypes: Web Warriors, and SHIELD.  This expansion really built out both of those trait lines.  If you can’t get it, then you’re getting half the Web Warrior stuff if you buy Spider Ham or SP//DR.  And you’re getting half the SHIELD stuff if you buy Agents of SHIELD*.  This is extremely improvident for FFG: for those of us who didn’t get Sinister Motives, the latest expansion seems to lack a foundation.  I’ve seen those awesome SHIELD decks on Marvel CDB.  They look cool.  


Looking at Jubilee’s cards, eh –maybe she’ll be alright.  I agree with most reviewers that she looks flawed.  I like the theme they created with tons of stuns and confuses.  That’s great.  Her Shopping Spree stuff seems tricky, because she has to exhaust to use it, and her resource causes her to exhaust, but she has no readies in her kit.  She’s going to spend the whole game exhausted.  She seems like a one-trick pony.


I’m not sure how Age of Apocalypse is gone already…  I wouldn’t mind picking it up, but somehow FFG didn’t print enough or something.


Looking at newly announced Cycle 9 decks:

  • Shuri - Justice (Wakanda / Wakanda + Genius on Alter Ego): this could be fun.  She seems to have a similar equipment theme as Black Panther.  It’s a possibility.

  • Silk - Protection (Web Warrior / Genius on Alter Ego): looks super cool, especially her web theme with encounter cards.  I like what I can see of her kit so far.  Ordinarily, she would be my top pick –but without Sinister Motives, it’s a pass.

  • Falcon - Leadership (Aerial Avenger / SHIELD on Alter Ego): obviously there are a ton of good cards for Avenger Leadership decks -add Aerial, and it’s open season.  I never made a total Aerial Avengers leadership deck with Sky Cycles, Flying Formation, and Aerial Supremacy.  This is a maybe.
  • Winter Soldier - Aggression (SHIELD / Soldier on both sides): I love Bucky, but this will be another hero with mostly awesome SHIELD deck builds, especially because he's traited for SHIELD on both sides. Again, without Sinister Motives, it's a pass.
  • Trickster Takeover (villain pack with Enchantress, a "Wrecking Crew" menagerie, and Loki). Obviously, this looks awesome. I love the Wrecking Crew and Kang scenarios where you take on multiple villains because you actually feel rewarded for defeating one. This is an absolute must-buy.

Multiplayer / Whole Box Deck Building / GMW difficulty level

Non-negotiables + Whole Box Building Goals / Limitations Because of my limited options for deck building, what if we are never able to do some of the harder villains?  For me, I don’t care.  I like the team role-specific puzzle aspect to it.  I want something that plays easy on game night.  My friends are learning the game –they’re not going to sit around for an hour doing deck-building for a game they’ve never played.  I need a box of playable heroes ready to go.  For me it’s less deck-building, and more deck-tweaking.  Every once in a while I’ll do some aspect swapping. I'll never play solo for Marvel Champions. I like the puzzle of how to pair aspects and heroes to create a good team. Note on ally dispersal in Aspect decks for whole box building. Adam Warlock Home Rules

 Ad am War lock Home Rules Here's my custom set for Adam Warlock.  Note that there are only a few hero decks which have major problems for me: Adam, Hulk, She Hulk, and Ms Marvel.  Finally, I'll probably make all the "team" cards discardable upgrades instead of unreliable events. Implementing house rules was tricky, because there's really not enough room on Adam's hero card to write anything.  Adding the rules to cards which get shuffled into your deck is sketchy: you might not get them when you need them.  We're back to Adam's original problem --he needs certain cards, but he ends up discarding them, and can't get them back.  Instead, I added two rules on two cards in order to give him a better chance to start controlling his discard pile.   The Karmic Staff and   Warlock's Cape have new rules on them.  Originally, I made an extra hero card called " Counter-Earth " which had the extra two rules on it, but that felt weird giving h...
